From 1969 to 1984, Bowie Kent Kuhn (October 28, 1926-March 15,
2007) served as the fifth commissioner of Major League Baseball ("MLB").1
Prior to becoming commissioner, Kuhn had been a partner in the New
York City law firm of Willkie Farr & Gallagher. Because the firm represented
the National League, Kuhn began the job of commissioner better
prepared than any of his predecessors. Yet as matters turned out, Kuhn
was ill-equipped for his new position. By the time he was shown the door,
he had become one of the most polarizing figures in baseball history.
