Abstract
Librarians have a rich history as privacy advocates who have mobilized lobbying, litigation, and education campaigns to combat state surveillance of their patrons’ reading habits. While contemporary threats to intellectual privacy take a different form — often coming from private actors — I argue that librarians are well positioned to extend their role as privacy advocates to combat unwanted surveillance by digital intermediaries.
